Lionel Yexley is the pen-name of James Wood,an able seaman who had transferred from the Navy to the Coast-Guard Service and then left the sea to become editor of a small but influential lower-deck newspaper called the "Bluejacket". He was regarded as a subversive influence by the majority of senior naval officers of the time.He edited the celebrated "Log" series of commission books during the Edwardian era,and in 1905 he resigned from the "Bluejacket" in order to launch his own-lower-deck monthly,'The Fleet'.Out of this grew this series of which this is Number 1.The identity of 'Tre-Pol-Pen' is not known, but it is a description used to indicate or identify a Cornishmen by his name with any of the 3 prefixes 'Tre', 'Pol','Pen'.The title is taken from 'Break the pennant! England is ready on the sea'; metaphorically, the pennant of war is ever ready at the mast-head waiting for the order to 'Break'. Chapters in this book include Steam Trials.Coaling Ship.'Man and Arm Boats'.The Flitting of the Fleet.'Out Nets'.Man Overboard.'Night Quarters','The Assassins of the Sea' (destroyer-torpedo-boats). 'Clear for Action'.'Land Every Available Man'.'Mooring Ship',The Sailing Race.Pay Day.Rolling Home. Yexley's trenchant criticisms attracted Fisher's attention and the Admiral invited Yexley to his home and was won over by his arguments.
